Top Layers

Also known as: Top Solid Layers, Top Shell

beginner Slicer Settings ⚙️ Slicer Setting

The solid horizontal layers that form the top surface of a print.

Top layers are the solid layers printed on top of infill to create a smooth, closed top surface.

  • Minimum: 3 layers
  • Standard: 4-5 layers
  • High quality: 6-7 layers

Why It Matters

  • Too few: Pillowing, gaps, weak top
  • Too many: Wasted time and material

Pillowing

Bumpy top surfaces caused by:

  • Not enough top layers
  • Insufficient cooling
  • Infill too sparse

Fix by adding more top layers or increasing infill percentage.
