A thick base layer printed under the model to help with adhesion and leveling issues.

A raft is a thick, multi-layer platform printed underneath your model. It provides a stable base and helps compensate for uneven beds or difficult adhesion.

When to Use a Raft

  • Very warpy materials (ABS without enclosure)
  • Extremely uneven bed
  • Models with tiny contact points
  • When all else fails for adhesion

Pros and Cons

Advantages

  • Best adhesion help available
  • Compensates for uneven beds
  • Protects bottom of model

Disadvantages

  • Uses significant material
  • Adds print time
  • Bottom surface quality suffers
  • Can be difficult to remove
  • Leaves rough bottom finish

Raft Settings

  • Raft Layers: Number of base layers (2-4)
  • Air Gap: Space between raft and model (makes removal easier)
  • Top Layers: Dense layers for better separation
  • Raft Margin: How far raft extends beyond model

Alternatives to Consider

  1. Brim - Less material, easier removal
  2. Better bed leveling - Solve root cause
  3. Enclosure - For warping issues
  4. Adhesive - Glue stick, hairspray

Removal Tips

  • Let print cool completely
  • Start at a corner
  • Use spatula to pry
  • Sanding may be needed for bottom surface
