Travel Move

Also known as: Travel, Non-Print Move

beginner Slicer Settings

Movement of the print head without extruding, when moving between print areas.

A travel move is when the print head moves from one location to another without extruding filament. Proper travel settings prevent stringing and collisions.

Travel Speed

Travel moves are typically the fastest movements:

  • Common range: 150-300mm/s
  • Faster = less time for oozing
  • Limited by printer mechanics

Retraction

Pull filament back during travel to prevent oozing.

Z-Hop

Lift nozzle slightly during travel to avoid hitting the print.

Combing

Route travel moves to avoid crossing perimeters, reducing visible artifacts.

Tips

  • Faster travel = less stringing
  • Z-hop helps with tall prints
  • Combing reduces surface marks
  • Avoid travel over supports if possible
