The build plate (or print bed) is the flat surface where your 3D print is created. Most modern printers have heated beds for better adhesion and to prevent warping.

Types of Build Surfaces

PEI (Polyetherimide)

  • Most popular for good reason
  • Excellent adhesion when hot
  • Parts release when cool
  • Smooth or textured options
  • Durable, can be refinished

Glass

  • Perfectly flat surface
  • Smooth bottom finish
  • May need adhesive helper
  • Can crack from thermal shock
  • Heavy

Magnetic Flexible Steel

  • Spring steel sheet on magnetic base
  • Flex to remove prints easily
  • Often coated with PEI or other surface
  • Very convenient

BuildTak/Specialty Surfaces

  • Textured adhesive sheets
  • Good adhesion out of the box
  • Wears out over time
  • Various brands available

Garolite (G10/FR4)

  • Ideal for Nylon
  • Fiberglass composite
  • Provides mechanical adhesion

Heated vs. Non-Heated

Heated Beds

  • Essential for ABS, PETG, most materials
  • Prevents warping
  • Helps adhesion
  • Improves first layer

Unheated Beds

  • Fine for PLA
  • Simpler, cheaper
  • May need adhesive help

Maintenance

  • Clean with isopropyl alcohol before each print
  • Avoid touching with fingers (oils)
  • Re-level after moving printer
  • Resurface PEI with fine sandpaper if worn
  • Donโ€™t scrape glass beds with metal
